OUTLINE

An introduction to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion with a deepdive into sex, gender, sexuality and the lived trans experience.

This will begin by exploring some of the key concepts in EDI, the national picture (including the Equality Act) and how this applies to schools. The case for active allyship and inclusive school culture will be made and delegates will be encouraged to think about practical steps to embed inclusivity at an individual and organisational level.

We will then deepdive into Sex, Gender and Sexuality.

Do you know the difference between non-binary and gender-queer? Are you aware that there is more to the biological sex binary than male and female? Are you keen to support your students but sometimes afraid to say the wrong thing?

The concepts and associated labels of sex, gender and sexuality will be discussed and some of the recent debate and controversy explored.

An insight into the lived trans experience will be shared by Samo and delegates will be encouraged to consider how they can best support trans and non-binary students in their schools.

Samo White is a professional artist, transgender educator and illustrator. He began his transition almost five years ago and channelled his experience into creating artworks as a form of non-verbal communication: Emotive and powerful documentation of his own changing body and mental health. As a queer artist, Samo’s focus is on interpreting the human condition and expressing perspective to connect in a powerfully revealing manner, engendering both empathy and respect from observers of his work. Samo’s message is clear and consistent: Embrace your true self, create positive awareness and feed the cycle of gratitude and giving back, to ultimately strengthen and build the networks of community. Featured in multiple documentaries, Samo is a leading campaigner for trans rights. His first book I EXIST uses artwork to celebrate the joy of transgender bodies, bringing awareness, love and acceptance to the trans community.
